Calgary Flames and free agent frenzy – who’s in and who’s out

02 Jul

The Calgary Flames signed three guys, Toronto Maple Leafs left wing Mason Raymond, Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller, and Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Deryk Engelland. Hiller will make $4.5M/season in a two-year deal, Raymond will make just over $3M for three years, and Engelland will make $2.9M for three seasons. More info on each is below.

Mike Cammalleri went to New Jersey for a nice $25M, 5-year deal. Good for Cammy, he deserved that. Joey MacDonald went to the Montreal Canadiens, in a move that didn’t surprise anyone. And role players Ben Street signed with Colorado while Blair Jones went to Philadelphia. Calgary signed Paul Byron for another year at $600,000.

The Calgary Flames also tendered qualifying offers to six restricted free agents: Chad BillinsLance BoumaJoe ColborneMark CundariBen Hanowski, and Joni Ortio.

On draft day the Flames traded the 83rd pick in the 2014 NHL Draft for Brandon Bollig of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Jarome Iginla went to the Colorado Avalanche shortly after they lost fan favourite in Paul Stastny. The Avalanche signed Iginla to a three-year, $16 million deal on Tuesday. Iginla scored 30 goals and had 31 assists in 78 games with the Boston Bruins last season. Since Calgary was needing to get to the cap, and Iggy doesn’t seem too concerned about winning a Cup, this deal confirms that the Iginla to Calgary Bridge has been burned.
