Brad Treliving named GM of the Calgary Flames

28 Apr

Wait, who? Yeah I’ve never heard of him either.

In his position with Calgary, Treliving will report directly to President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke. He will be responsible for all team personnel decisions, both players and staff; manage the amateur and pro scouting staffs; as well as other administrative duties required of the general manager. He is also responsible for all player personnel assignments with Flames’ minor league affiliates.

Treliving has been Don Maloney’s right-hand man in Phoenix and is a very knowledgeable hockey mind. He played the game himself and even ran the Central League for seven years before coming to the Coyotes, where he ran both AHL Portland and the team’s scouting department.

It will be interesting to see what Treliving can do in Calgary, since the Coyotes were always constrained by financial issues. He and Maloney still managed to take an also-ran franchise and turn it into a contender when they teamed up in 2007-08, getting the Coyotes into the playoffs two seasons later and even winning a division title in 2011-12.
