This game was a lot less close than the score would have you believe. It was less close than the shot totals would have you believe. This is one of those games you had to see to know that Calgary just wasn’t really in this one. They had 33 shots, but most of them were wrist-shots from the point (Regehr would be proud). Reto Berra played just well enough to lose, letting in 2 goals on 23 shots.
Now the Flames have a three week break while the good hockey players go play in Sochi. Except for Berra and Smid, who will be representing their countries.
In real news, The Flames announced Saturday that they have signed defenseman Kris Russell to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2.6 million per season. I think that this isn’t a bad deal at all. Russell has been pretty good, he’s still young at 26, and even though he’s had a couple injuries this year, is still having his best — statistically speaking — of his career. He has 4 goals and 16 assists in 44 games.
