Flames 4, Coyotes 1

05 Dec

The Flames were badly outplayed for most of the first period, being outshot 11-3. Luckily they were able to stay within one, and a goal by Brodie with just 8 seconds left in the first was huge in terms of the game’s momentum.

After that goal you could tell that Phoenix was a team playing in the second half of back-to-back road games. Calgary turned it on in the second and third — although the shots didn’t really reflect the play — and were able to get some fortunate bounces and plenty of odd-man rushes. Especially in the final frame and while shorthanded.

With the Stempniak short-handed goal, the Flames are now leading the league in that category with 6. Remember during the shortened season when they didn’t score a shorthanded goal until the very end of the year? I think they were the last team to do so? Well… now the Hartley PK machine is rollin’!

Last night’s game also featured the return of captain Mark Giordano, who didn’t miss a step with a few blocked shots as well as a goal and an assist.
