Flames 5, Islanders 3 AND Flames 4, Islanders 2

18 Sep

TJ Galiardi had a goal and an assist and Dennis Wideman had two as a Flames split squad scored four times in the second period on its way to a 5-3 victory over a New York Islanders. In Regina Sean Monahan had two goals and the Flames had another four-goal second period to beat New York again. Matt Stajan and Mikael Backlund each had a goal for the Flames, and Corban Knight set up two.

The Flames are now 3-2 in the pre-season, which of course means nothing. I’m certainly looking forward to the first wave of cuts so we can start to speculate what the lines, pairings and goalies will be.

Senators 4, Flames 2

18 Sep

The Ottawa Senators defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.

The only incident of note in the first period was the massive hit Senators 6-4, 207-pound defenceman Michael Sdao on David Jones. He was immediately challenged to fight by the talent-depleted Flames’ de facto No. 1 centre, Matt Stajan.

Sdao would pay dearly for defending himself.

In the second, he made the mistake of accepting a challenge from former Senators heavyweight Brian McGratton, who immediately landed a couple blows and sent Sdao turtling to the ice for mere survival.
