Flames trade Tanguay and Sarich for Jones and O’Brien of the Avalanche

28 Jun

The Calgary Flames have traded forward Alex Tanguay and defenceman Cory Sarich to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward David Jones and defenceman Shane O’Brien.

I don’t know much about Shane O’Brien, but from what I can remember he plays a similar style to Sarich – but he’s younger. So I guess trading a guy who’s getting close to the end, for a younger version of a guy who’s getting close to the end, is a good deal.

David Jones used to be someone people were talking about. And then he came out and had a pretty lacklustre year last year. Before that, Jones had 20 goals the year before and 27 goals the year before that. Clearly the Flames are hoping there is still some of that 20-goal-man left in him.

The downside of this deal is the money. Tanguay had three years left on a contract that pays $3.5 million per year, and Sarich has one year left at $2 million. That’s $12.5M in three years.

On Calgary’s side, Jones had three years left on a contract paying $4 million per, and O’Brien two years at $2 million each. That’s $16M in three years.

Actaully, that’s pretty close to a wash. I guess we’ll see how Tangs does compared to Jones next year. If we can get the Saddledome pumped out by then.

Flames acquire Corban Knight for their fourth round pick

18 Jun

The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired centre Corban Knight from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Flames fourth round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Here is the skinny on Knight

Sounds like a better deal than you’d get from a fourth rounder this year, but only time will tell. Here is what Uncle Feaster had to say:

“Corban Knight is a player our scouts have been watching closely throughout his collegiate career,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “When Florida did not sign Corban this spring we contacted them and asked for permission to speak with him. Florida granted teams, including ours, that opportunity on the condition that we were prepared to trade for his rights. During the past ten days we spoke with Corban and his agent, and were pleased to learn Corban wanted to start his pro career in Calgary. We were able to consummate the trade today with Florida, and are confident we will get Corban signed when permitted in July. We are thrilled to add him to our organization, and look forward to his debut in a Flames’ sweater this Fall.”

Well we scooped the Oilers who were courting him, so that’s good for something.
