I’m happy to report that Calgary won a game they probably shouldn’t have. They were outshot, they kept making bonehead plays, and the tried to hold on to a one goal lead for half the game.
Of those three brainfarts, giving up all those shots seems to be the most harmless, as the Flames have only lost one game this year when outshot. The actual stat is that they have a .200 winning percentage when they outshoot their opponent, and a .625 winning percentage when outshot.
I had to laugh at the Herald’s “Calgary shows mental toughness” headline after the win, because there were enough stupid passes, giveaways and oh-that’s-good-enough plays to choke a camel. Perhaps by mental toughness they meant thick-headed?
Even on Glencross’s winning goal, it was a bad giveaway by the Flames in the offensive zone during a powerplay. However what followed was an even worse giveaway by Colorado in the defensive zone on a penalty kill. A bad pass to Glencross hits him in the crotch, and it goes in. I guess some nights you’re just meant to win.
And with the win Calgary passes both St. Louis and Anaheim in the standings to 12th spot in the West. Just three spots to go to hit our goal!
