Flames begin the pre-season at 1-1

21 Sep

Flames 5 – Canucks 1

At home the Flames looked pretty good, jumping out to an 3-0 lead in the first and never looking back. Alex Tanguay and Tom Kostopoulos  each had a goal and an assist in the game.

Canucks 4 – Flames 3

On the road, Calgary blew a third period lead to drop the second half of the split-squad games against Vancouver. The Flames owned this game, or the first two periods anyway, led by the mythical Nik Hagman, a hockey player virtually unknown to the NHL ranks.

Yea pre-season hockey!

Happy to see Hagman and Stajan playing for their lives this year. Twenty goals from Hagman, Tangs, Borque, Stempniak, Moss and Glencross would go a long ways this year, esp. if Iggy has to rest a lot and Miika isn’t in top form (or he stays out too late too often). As for Stajan, three goals would qualify as an improvement.

Disappointing to see that John Negrin was one of the first cuts this year. Along with Matt Pelech (who was cut loose in the off-season and is now trying out for San Jose), these were two of the players who Darryl felt made Keith Aulie so expendible. But then again, who are we kidding? That trade was pure panic with goal in mind: get Neon Dion out of the dressing room as fast as possible. And that worked out well for everyone, except Keith Aulie, who still has to play with Neon Dion.
