So Sportsnet ONE launches August 14th and you just know that Roger’s is somehow going to screw us over with this one. Apparently PPV wasn’t working for them (paying $15 to watch bad hockey teams play terribly? I can’t believe that didn’t work!) so they are no longer doing PPV games, but rather putting them all on their new channel and charging the Alberta hockey fans – that still exist – money to watch. We don’t know how much it will be, but we do know that we are getting charged for it. According to Rogers “[the cost will be] determined by your television service provider.”
And you know what else? It’s a 10-year deal! So if it costs more than PPV would (and be sure it will) they have us over a barrel for 10 freakin’ years!
Rogers owns you!
The announcement said that “Sportsnet ONE will combine to televise at least 58 Calgary Flames.” Then I got to wondering, is that more or less than Sportsnet West would have done? So I checked. Let’s assume ‘at least 58’ means 58. CBC has already committed to broadcasting 14 Flames games next year. That leaves TSN to do 10. Sportsnet West will NOT be doing any games anymore but you can bet that you have to subscribe to it to be able to subscribe to Sporstnet ONE.
As soon as I figure out how much this will cost – I’ll post it. If you’re on anyone other than Shaw Direct, I’d appreciate it if you would do the same.
